Internal And External Symptoms Of Sepsis
The disease sepsis is related to the blood stream of the humans and is caused due to the presence of some specific bacterial organisms. Their presence is harmful to the normal functioning of the various internal organs and is hence known to cause poisoning to the blood and the organs alike. The effect of this poisoning leads to the organs suffering from inflammation. This is not limited to only some of the organs but to the whole body. This inflammation causes the arteries and the veins to contract leading to a reduced rate of blood flow which further adds to the problems. In certain cases, people have been known to suffer from strokes. The metabolism suffers due to reduced about of oxygen which can also lead to the patient not being able to perform the regular body functions like movement.
For an individual who is not from the medical background, identifying sepsis can be a problem. Some of the common symptoms of this disease have been mentioned below to facilitate them with this problem. It is advised that if they are witnessed in anyone, they should be taken to the hospital immediately and handed over to a doctor who specializes in such cases.
The external symptoms:
Fever: Initially starting with mild fever, over the time it aggravates into one that is high. It starts around 99 F and can go up to 103 F.
Breathing problems: As the time elapses, the breathing becomes more rugged with the patient getting tired earlier than usual and the heart beat increasing considerably with little workout. It slowly becomes shallow and rapid.
The blood pressure reduces due to the imbalances in the sugar levels.
Laziness and restlessness: The patient can become lethargic and restless at the same time. In such cases, he comes to suffer from delirium which is a mental state of illness.
The internal symptoms:
There is excess of coagulation. This is the phenomenon which takes place which is commonly seen when the blood clots after bleeding. Sepsis can affect the amount of blood clotting hormones that are released leading to clots in unwanted places.
Some of the organs stop working over the time due to continuous exposure to harmful bacteria infected blood. This happens because of excess damage. This ultimately leads to reduction in the immunity levels causing other illness to the patient which are subject to it.
The inner lining of the blood vessels responsible for maintaining the smooth flow of blood gets affected resulting in the ineffective flow leading to the secretion of lactic acid in certain areas which tends to become painful.
As mentioned earlier, identifying sepsis in the early stages is difficult unless it is specifically being searched for. The biggest disadvantage of it is that if discovered late, containing it can be pretty hard as a major amount of organs stop functioning making the recovery very slow. Sepsis retains one of the top spots in the list of the diseases that lead to the maximum number of deaths.
